When might I need a dental crown?

Dental crowns fully rehabilitate a damaged tooth by covering it with a porcelain cap. Your new crown is strong enough to restore normal function to a damaged tooth and it can be used to cover cosmetic problems.

You may use a dental crown to:

  • Repair a tooth with significant decay
  • Strengthen and preserve cracked or broken teeth
  • Restore a tooth’s natural shape
  • Protect a tooth after a root canal
  • Hide stained teeth
  • Cover a gap between teeth
  • Change the appearance of slightly crooked teeth

Your dentist at EZ Dental Clinic can also attach a crown to a dental implant to replace missing teeth.

Will my crown match my existing teeth?

Your crown will definitely match your existing teeth in color, size, and shape. You can choose from two materials: porcelain and zirconia. Both materials have a beautiful, translucent quality that makes them look just like natural teeth.

When a crown is made for a front tooth, it’s made out of porcelain or zirconia. Crowns made for molars, however, need extra strength to stand up to years of chewing. This strength comes from porcelain combined with metal or zirconia alone.

What is the process of getting a crown?

Getting a crown is a two-visit process. At your first visit, your dentist at EZ Dental Clinic prepares the tooth by removing decay, if needed. Then they slightly reshape the tooth to make room for the crown.

Your dentist takes an impression of your teeth and sends it to the professional lab that makes a crown to fit your mouth. After your tooth is covered with a temporary crown, you’ll wait about two weeks while the lab makes your crown.

As soon as the crown is ready, your second visit is scheduled. During this visit, your dentist removes the temporary crown and replaces it with your new crown.

If you’re getting a dental implant, your dentist inserts the implant during your first visit. Then you’ll need to give the bone time to regrow and fuse with the implant before your new crown is attached.
