Root Canals

Most restorative dental treatments work by repairing your tooth from the outside. But sometimes damage goes much deeper, affecting the nerve inside of your tooth. Left untreated, dying or infected dental nerves can cause symptoms like:

  • Abscesses
  • Darkening of enamel
  • Inner resorption (shrinkage)
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Pain
  • Tooth loss

Fortunately, there’s a treatment option that repairs a tooth from the inside, saving your smile. Endodontic therapy — or more commonly known as “root canal treatment” — is a proactive way to maintain the integrity of your tooth so that you don’t have to lose it prematurely.

What is a

Root Canal?

Root Canals Bellevue WA

During endodontic treatment, the infected nerve inside of your tooth is removed. Next, the hollow chamber is cleaned out, medicated, and a filling material is placed inside to seal out any new bacteria from re-entering the tooth.

Getting a root canal is a lot like having a filling, except the procedure takes a little longer. Thanks to CT scanning, we can get a three-dimensional view of your root’s anatomy to make the process more efficient.

Your tooth will be thoroughly numbed so that you don’t have to feel a thing. If you have a visible abscess, our Bellevue dentist may need to prescribe an antibiotic before the appointment, since swelling can prevent anesthesia from working as effectively. It will not, however, prevent infection from reoccurring (that’s why you need a root canal, even after antibiotic treatment.)

After root canal treatment, you’ll need a crown to protect the tooth structure that’s left.

Tooth Extractions

VS Root Canals

Sometimes a dental extraction is the best solution for severe pain or emergencies. However, removing a tooth creates extra space in your mouth, which can lead to changes in your overall bite. Crooked teeth or TMJ disorder may be an unwanted side effect. It’s best to preserve your natural tooth if at all possible.
