Extractions Q&A

What are extractions?

A dental extraction is the complete removal of a tooth and the root that anchors it into your jawbone. Extractions typically happen quickly, so any pain or pressure you feel is temporary. There are two types of extractions:

Simple extractions

Simple extractions happen when you can see the tooth that needs removing in your mouth among your other teeth. Your dentist can easily grab ahold of it with special tools to loosen it before pulling it out.

Surgical extractions

You need a surgical extraction if the tooth in question is fully below the surface of your gums, either because it hasn’t emerged or the crown broke off. Your dentist makes an incision in your gums to access the tooth and may need to break it into pieces to remove it.

When is a dental extraction necessary?

Dental extractions aren’t always the first resort, but they may be your best or only option. If you need an extraction, your dentist at EZ Dental Clinic tells you why it’s the best option and what you can expect during and after the procedure.

Some common reasons for dental extractions include:

  • Making room for orthodontic alignment
  • Replacing a tooth with a dental implant
  • Making more space in your mouth in general
  • Removing teeth with damage or decay beyond repair

One of the most common types of tooth extractions is a wisdom tooth extraction. Your wisdom teeth are the four molars in the far back of your mouth that emerge between ages 17 and 25.

If they don’t have enough room to come in properly, you might decide to have them removed to prevent future dental complications.

What should I expect during the recovery after an extraction?

EZ Dental Clinic takes a unique, yet effective, approach to recovery after tooth extractions called platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) therapy.

Before your procedure starts, the team takes a sample of your blood and puts it in a centrifuge to spin for several minutes. The blood separates into distinct layers, one of which has a high concentration of platelets, growth factors, and a few white blood cells. This is PRF.

The components in PRF promote bone growth and tissue healing. The team applies it across the tissue in your mouth surrounding the tooth extraction. This makes for faster healing time and less pain throughout the treatment.

With PRF therapy, you won’t need to rely on pain medications to get you through your recovery. The team gives you distinct instructions to follow as you heal from your extraction, like eating soft foods and using ice to reduce swelling.
