TMJ Q&A

What is my TMJ?

Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge joint connecting your jawbone to your skull. You have two of them: one on each side of your head near your temples.

Normally, these joints move smoothly to allow you to open and close your mouth. They help you talk and chew your food. However, like other joints, they’re prone to developing pain and other complications.

Your TMJ consists of more than just a couple of bones. There are muscles, ligaments, and cartilage all working together to help your jaw move. If you experience pain or stiffness around your TMJ, any of the structures within the joint could be the source.

What is a TMJ disorder?

TMJ disorders are complications involving your temporomandibular joints. Due to an injury, a condition like arthritis affecting your joints, teeth grinding, and other factors, you can develop pain and discomfort around one or both of your temporomandibular joints.

Common symptoms of TMJ disorders include:

  • Jaw pain
  • Headaches
  • Earaches
  • Jaw stiffness
  • Jaw locking
  • Clicking sounds when you open your mouth
  • A bone-grinding sensation when you open your mouth
  • Trouble chewing and swallowing

At EZ Dental Clinic, the team evaluates your symptoms and helps design an appropriate course of treatment. In many cases, TMJ symptoms go away without any intervention. If you rest the joint, some TMJ disorders can resolve on their own.

How is TMJ disorder treated?

Not all cases of TMJ disorder go away without professional care. The team at EZ Dental Clinic offers several treatment options for TMJ pain, stiffness, and other symptoms. They may start with X-rays, CT scans, and other imaging techniques for a better view of the joint.

Nonsurgical treatment options for TMJ disorders are:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Certain antidepressants
  • Mouthguards for teeth grinding
  • Physical therapy jaw exercises

In a few cases, surgery or joint injections are necessary to relieve TMJ pain and stiffness. The team at EZ Dental Clinic starts with conservative options first and explains your options when it comes to more invasive treatments.

If your jaw feels painful, stiff, or stuck, call EZ Dental Clinic for professional TMJ care or book an appointment online today.
